Mit Coventry verbindet Dresden eine enge Städtepartnerschaft – das ist bekannt. Der Dresden Marathon e.V. möchte nun die Partnerschaft auf sportlicher Ebene erweitern und vertiefen und für Dresden mit unserem Marathon werben, sportliche Beziehungen knüpfen helfen und vielleicht auch sportliche sowie lauforganisatorische Impulse austauschen.

In Coventry feiert man beispielsweise das Laufen mit einem Festival während einer ganzen Woche – dem „Festival of Running“. Neben dem Halbmarathon und einem 5 km Lauf gibt es Kinder- und Charityläufe. Alle können dabei sein!

Wir haben Coventry besucht, wurden freundlich im Rathaus begrüßt und konnten Dave Long, einen ehemaligen Weltklasse-Marathonläufer und Olympiateilnehmer sowie Paul Muller von der Coventry University als Organisatoren des Lauffestivals kennenlernen. Die tollen T-Shirts des Coventry-Lauffestivals haben wir in unserer Dresdner Heide schon mal Probe getragen, ehe vielleicht im nächsten Jahr ein Dresdner Team in Coventry am Start ist. Und 2021 lohnt sich doppelt – denn dann ist Coventry „UK City of Culture“! Doch zuvor hoffen wir auf die Teilnahme eines Coventry-Teams zur 1. Marathonstaffel am 27.10.19 bei unserem Dresden-Marathon.

Coventry and Dresden are twinning cities since 1959 and linked through a tight and well known partnership. The Dresden Marathon e.V. now wants to broaden and deepen this partnership in an athletic direction. For one thing to make our marathon better known in our twinning cities and also to swap ideas on different aspects of running – the sportive as well as the organizational part. In Coventry for instance running is celebrated with a whole festival-week: the Festival of Running. Apart from a half marathon and a 5k run there are children and charity races. It is for everybody to participate!

We visited Coventry, were friendly received in the Mayors’ office and had the chance to meet Dave Long, a former world class marathon runner and participant at the Olympic games as well as Paul Muller from the Coventry University, two members of the organizing team of the Festival. We tested the good-looking T-Shirts of the Coventry runningfestival in the “Dresdner Heide” – the city forest and a great area for running. Maybe next year we hope to start with a Dresden team in Coventry. And in 2021 a trip would be even more worthwhile – then Coventry is the UK City of Culture! But before we hope that we will receive a Coventry-team to participate at the first Marathon relay at the Dresden Marathon on Oct. 27^th, 2019.
